I received my very first PR package from @sagemeel and I am very thankful for it... It was beautifully packed with two books and some bookmarks in it. so one of the book was "aag ka darya" and I read it quite a while ago but was not able to post my review up til now.
Goodreads rating: 4.10/5 ★
Goodreads Review: The most important novel of twentieth-century Urdu fiction.
First published in 1959, Aag ka Darya encompasses the fates of four recurring characters over two and a half millennia: Gautam, Champa, Kamal, and Cyril—Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian. In different eras different relations form and reform among the four: romance and war, possession and dispossession. Interweaving parables, legends, dreams, diaries, and letters, Hyder's prose is lyrical and witty. And she argues for a culture that is inclusive: Aag ka Darya is a book that questions the relevance of religion in defining Indian identity.
MY RATING: 3/5 ★
MY REVIEW:It is a well documented history of evolution of indian society and religious thoughts. The story is basically written in the tradition of a historical novel but where we see different characters of different era.
It was an okay book for me because the author basically focused on irrelevant detail. The chapters were not evenly divided in a particular order. The story just starts off randomly and is left unfinished. I would have enjoyed it even more if I knew indian terms because there are a lot of indian terms used in this novel.
